Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari

Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari (born 22 March 1971) is a Pakistani politician from Dera Ghazi Khan who has served in the National Assembly of Pakistan across several terms since 2002. He is the son of Farooq Leghari, former President of Pakistan, and belongs to a family that has held political office in the Dera Ghazi Khan region for four generations.

Leghari was educated at Aitchison College, Lahore, and later graduated from the University of Rochester, New York, in 1994 with majors in Economics and Political Science. He was first elected to the Provincial Assembly of Punjab in 1997, and entered the National Assembly in 2002 from Dera Ghazi Khan, going on to serve as Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunications from 2002 to 2007, a period during which Pakistan’s telecom sector saw rapid growth.

Leghari won a National Assembly by-election in 2011 following his father’s death, and was re-elected in 2013, subsequently joining the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz). He was inducted into the federal cabinet in 2017 and served as Federal Minister for Power until the government’s term ended in 2018.

Leghari was re-elected to the National Assembly from NA-186 Dera Ghazi Khan-III in the 2024 general election. He briefly served as Federal Minister for Railways before being appointed Federal Minister for Energy in the cabinet of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in March 2024, a position he continues to hold.
