Biography

Allah Ditta Loonay Wala (1957 – 29 June 2021) was one of the most celebrated Punjabi and Saraiki folk singers of Pakistan, renowned for his powerful, high-pitched voice and his masterful vocal ornamentation. He was born in the village of Loonay Wala near Chiniot, Punjab, and took his stage name from his native village, following a common tradition among Punjabi and Saraiki folk singers.

Although his father hoped he would become a doctor, Allah Ditta’s passion for music emerged early, and he began singing in school programs (“Bazm-e-Adab”). His talent was noticed by his teacher, who introduced him to the respected classical music teacher Mian Issa in Okara. Mian Issa’s son, Mian Talib Hussain, went on to give Allah Ditta formal vocal training, shaping the distinctive style that would define his career.

His first album included the songs “Shaaman Pei Gaeyaan,” “Ticketaan Do Lei Lei” and “Main Cham Cham Nachdi Phiraan,” all of which became instant folk classics. Over a career spanning more than five decades, he became widely regarded as one of the finest Punjabi-Saraiki folk singers of his era, spoken of in the same breath as Mansoor Malangi.

In recognition of his contribution to Pakistani folk music, Allah Ditta received the Pride of Performance and Pride of Punjab awards from the Government of Pakistan. He passed away on 29 June 2021 in Chiniot, Punjab, due to a heart attack, at the age of 64. His youngest son, Nadeem Abbas, has continued the family’s musical legacy as a folk singer in his own right.
